Sasha Bruce

My name is Dae’Janae Day,

I am an upcoming graduate at the University of Maryland- Eastern Shore and I am a current resident at Sasha Bruce’s Promise Place in Prince George’s County.

During my first two years of high school, my Grandmother was my inspiration to push forward and make the best grades possible. But in my junior year she passed away, then that was when everything went down-hill. I went through emotional and physical trauma being raised by my mother.  As she kept trying to put me down, I remembered everything my Grandmother taught me and I kept pushing to the finish line, graduating with honors and getting accepted into the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 2014.

I got kicked out of my house twice during this time. The first time I got kicked out was because I wanted to go to a 4-year institution (which was fully paid because of my academics and FASFA) instead of attending a local college like my Mother wanted, but I was 17 at the time so I had to go back and live with her. The second time was because of all the drama and violence my Mother brought upon every last one of us (me and my sisters).

With nothing I had to start from scratch, with the help of my mentors of course. But in August of 2015, I became a full time resident at Promise Place.  Mr. Robert Bell and the staff at Sasha Bruce’s Promise Place welcomed me with open arms and taught me many of the life lessons that  I am living by currently.  While in college, I came back to Promise Place during my breaks (Christmas, Thanksgiving and summer breaks) and this I am grateful for:  to have some type of safe haven to lay my head at without stressing about what to eat or where I would rest. I had the opportunity to do plenty of internships, including the one I did this semester at the Maryland General Assembly with Delegate Bonnie Cullison of District 19 (which I am truly grateful for).

My plans after graduation is to enter the political realm and if I am unable to do that, I will help out the community one step at a time, until the time comes for me to represent the state of Maryland – Governor in 2026!
