The need for pregnancy prevention among youth in DC is profound. For instance, according to the DC Child & Family Services Agency, nearly half of young women in foster care have been pregnant by age 19. Petula Dvorak’s column in today’s Washington Post examines this problem in the context of a recent decision by the federal government to prohibit teens under 18 from attaining Plan B, the so-called “morning-after” pill.

New report on youth homelessness

Our 37-year history providing shelter to homeless youth has demonstrated — time and again — that family conflict and abuse are primary factors which force young people to the streets. Our experience is corroborated through a report released today by the DC Alliance for Youth Advocates. Every young person deserves shelter, food, family and love. Every child needs them. “Rebecca” is one of hundreds of young people who come to us fleeing from abuse. I am happy to say that we have offered her a safe home during Thanksgiving, and I want to thank you for being part of her unseen support network.

Helping young people prepare for the workforce and land living-wage jobs is a challenge which SBY’s staff and volunteers confront every day. And it is no secret to us that African Americans in DC’s poorest communities—and particularly those without a high school diploma or GED—need job training and other supports to achieve self-sufficiency. Our YouthBuild workforce development program is one proven model for doing just that.
