SBY to open new youth & family center

The neighborhood surrounding the Richardson Dwellings public housing projects in Ward 7 is devoid of intermediate civic institutions essential to healthy communities, and it is rife with youth crime and delinquency. According to the MPD Crime Statistics Report, in 2009, there were 1,032 arrests of individuals under the age of 24 in PSA 602, which includes Richardson Dwellings. This represents the highest youth arrest rate among all of DC’s residential neighborhoods.

It is not uncommon to see politicians proclaim that the economy is rebounding. But for low income people, the recession continues. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ annual homeless count, released today, shows a 10% increase in homeleess families in the region. A third are children.
