Gun-related violence continues

The most prominent news in the nation’s capital often seems to be related to federal policy, political campaigns and international diplomacy or wars. Too often the plight of disconnected and impoverished youth and families does not receive the attention which it merits. Volunteers, staff and supporters of Sasha Bruce Youthwork, however, are all too aware of this problem though it often takes a terrible outbreak of violence to bring it to the attention of large numbers of people.

Volunteer with SBY for tickets to Virgin FreeFest!

For the 2nd consecutive year, Sasha Bruce Youthwork has been designated as a beneficiary of Virgin Mobile’s FreeFest. SBY is one of many organizations through which, by volunteering, eager fans can earn tickets to the sold out free festival to be held on September 25.

YouthBuild Class Set to Graduate!

2nd of August 2010

A class of 17 trainees who have completed their course of study with the YouthBuild program (having started last May) are set to graduate Thursday, August 5 at 1 PM. Many of the trainees completed their GEDs and/or construction certifications. Trainees are currently working, in internships, or applying for internships, jobs, or school. The ceremony will consist of light refreshments, live music, special presentations and a keynote speaker, as well as the distribution of awards and certificates to the trainees.

Congresswoman Speier visits shelter

According to our long-term nonprofit partner Polaris Project, an estimated 200,000 American children are at high-risk for trafficking into the sex industry each year. So it should be no surprise that our outreach teams often engage this most vulnerable population on the streets and refer them to our emergency shelter, the Sasha Bruce House.

A conversation on alcohol and other drugs - July 30

SBY’s Prevention Center has facilitated 12 community conversations this year in order to hear the ideas of youth, caregivers and other individuals and groups who are concerned with drug and alcohol use in Wards 5 and 6. Please join us as we report on these stakeholder meetings, which have included members of churches, other nonprofits, police, and residents of housing projects.
