Annual count reveals increasing #s of homeless
13th of April 2011
It is not uncommon to see politicians proclaim that the economy is rebounding. But for low income people, the recession continues. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ annual homeless count, released today, shows a 10% increase in homeleess families in the region. A third are children.
It is difficult to “count” the number of homeless people in our area. One method – as good as any other – is to examine a one-day “snapshot” of individuals and families living on the streets, in parks and in temporary shelter. Noteworthy among the Council’s findings from January is that nearly 40% of homeless adults are employed….a testament to the dearth of living wage jobs and affordable housing.
