New report on high unemployment among DC youth

6th of October 2011

Helping young people prepare for the workforce and land living-wage jobs is a challenge which SBY’s staff and volunteers confront every day. And it is no secret to us that African Americans in DC’s poorest communities—and particularly those without a high school diploma or GED—need job training and other supports to achieve self-sufficiency. Our YouthBuild workforce development program is one proven model for doing just that.

Our recognition of this problem is corroborated by a new report from the Brookings Institution which reveals that roughly 40% of low income youth in DC are not enrolled in school and not working. Sasha Bruce Youth Organizer Levi Thompson continues to bring this issue to the public’s attention—read Levi’s thoughts on this topic and learn more about the Brookings study through Chris L. Jenkins’ piece on the front page of today’s Washington Post Metro Section.
