Federal budget axe threatens teen pregnancy program
10th of March 2011
Laura Sessions Stepp’s recent article on CNN.com, details Ruth Jones’ experience of growing up in a housing project in Virginia and being surrounded by pregnant teenage girls her own age.
One of the factors that kept her from getting pregnant was the positive influence of her mentor.
Ms. Jones, long time friend and former employee of SBY, now works as the Director of External Partnerships at Ballou High School. She has been instrumental in establishing our YouthLed after school programming at the school, and she has helped us launch our new teen pregnancy prevention program. This program, called Teen Outreach Program (TOP), has been proven effective in pregnancy prevention for 30 years. If Congress does not eliminate the funding, TOP participants at Ballou will improve academically and decrease their risk of having unplanned pregnancies.
