Executive Director to host Youth-Led Media Arts Expo
19th of August 2009
It is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone to a Showcase Presentation of the work of our Youthled program this Friday the 21st. Youthled is the newest program at Sasha Bruce and from its inception it has modeled the founding mission of our organization by developing innovative ways of engaging young people and truly empowering them.
We are in an era when a community organizer became president. We are so proud that Youthled is made up of a group of developing community organizers which we believe is transformative for both young people and our communities. In all of our programs at Sasha Bruce, we encourage youth to have a voice in the solutions to the problems which face them. In Youthled the youth voice is at the core of the work. This past year, I have seen and heard about wonderful contributions the young people have made to school life at Anacostia and Ballou Senior High Schools. This summer, with the aid of expressive arts in both drama and electronic media, they worked on how to create more healthful communities. I believe it will be to all of our benefits if we carefully listen to what they are telling us.
Please join us on Friday, August 21 at 6 pm at Union Temple Baptist Church, 1225 W Street SE for an exposition of our young peoples’ media arts project.

I want to thank Erica de Bardeleben and Adam Angel for their vision, commitment and tireless work with Youthled. Thank you also to Councilmember Marion Barry for helping to assure support for this new endeavor. The Open Society Institute is a new partner, and we are very excited about our collaboration in the coming months. I am also grateful to the Freddie Mac Foundation and the Children and Youth Investment Trust for their support. Also to the Consumer Health Foundation for their belief in this vision and support for it. Great thanks also to the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities for their help with this summer program and to Anne Ashmore-Hudson.
Looking forward to seeing you on Friday, Deborah Shore
