Garden project featured in Post
5th of April 2010
SBY relies on dedicated volunteers to help disconnected youth. One promising volunteer-led venture is our community vegetable garden. Katie Aldworth, whom we know through her outreach to young victims of sex trafficking, has taken the reins of this project and it was featured in today’s Washington Post
The first year of this collaborative relationship with Beet Street Gardens will focus on building a self-sustaining community garden presence at two SBY sites and educating youth and volunteers about gardening and nutrition. Future seasons of collaboration may include expansion to providing economic opportunities and job training. Our aim is to build bridges to the larger urban gardening community and green economy in a constant pursuit of positive change.
Join us at the Bruce House shelter at 1022 Maryland Avenue, NE, on the afternoon of Friday, April 23 as we kick-off the garden project and celebrate Global Youth Service Day. We’ll have plenty of volunteeer work projects. So bring friends and families. We’ll end the day with a speech from a special guest and a barbeque to include locally grown produce starting at 5 pm.
