Join us for opening of new barbering school!

25th of July 2011

On Thursday, July 28th at 4:30 PM, SBY will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new barber styling training facility and barbershop to be housed at our Richardson Dwellings Drop-in center, located at 262 54th St., NE.

The barbering school, to be called 54th and Cutz is part of a workforce development program called “Opportunity Knocks” which also trains disconnected and low-income youth in construction and green cleaning janitorial services in hope of getting them on the right track, and into the workforce.

Richardson Dwellings is a public housing community in one of Northeast D.C.’s most violence plagued areas. After a slew of murders over Labor Day weekend 2010, SBY was solicited by the resident council to offer violence prevention and positive youth development activities to area youth. In early 2011, SBY opened its Richardson Dwellings Drop-In Center, where 54th and Cutz will be housed.

Funded partially through District government and the Children & Youth Investment Trust Corporation, the number of participants in the program is limited, and further support to sustain and expand the program is needed.

In addition to learning barbering and other professional skills, program participants are given employability skills training for resume writing, interviewing techniques, knowledge of appropriate interview, job identification and job retention.

Youth in this program are paid during both training and work experience, while all haircuts are free to the community. Program graduates receive job placement and retention services.
