Meeting Obama’s call to service
16th of February 2009
The Sasha Bruce House shelter is more home-like since Obama took-up a paint brush with us. His visit is noteworthy, but in the end, his call to service—and what we do about it—are what matter most.
Obama’s call to service and volunteerism was clear. By choosing SBY as the place where he urged Americans to public service, we must assume a new responsiblitiy to help our communities heed his call.
Our Board of Directors is leading the way by engaging new supporters and experts in the fields of community organizing and “green” design to continue renovations and beautification of the shelter this Spring. In the meantime, SBY staff and the youth and families that we serve will celebrate Obama’s visit and galvanize our neighbors about service and volunteering. On March 4, Debby Shore, SBY Executive Director, hosted a Pow-Wow to brainstorm what we can do in this regard. A full house of clients and volunteers offered ideas on what community service and volunteerism means to them and what types of services are needed. Stay tuned for the minutes of this meeting and for a follow-up session planned for early April.
