On the streets in the cold
14th of October 2010
It is unconscionable that families live on the streets in the nation’s capital. As Winter approaches, we must pull out all of the stops to offer a safe home for anyone who needs it. A Washington Post article by Nathan Rott sheds light on this challenge.
Most advocates for the homeless recognize that increasing the city’s stock of permanently affordable housing is the best long-term strategy for preventing homelessness. Yet Rott’s article reveals that the DC government continues to struggle with creating adequate Winter shelter space, NIMBYism and a debate on the merits of shelter vs permanent housing. The cold weather will not wait for resolution.
It is high time that all of us come together and agree to a comprehensive plan so that no one is left without a roof over his head. We need adequate emergency shelter AND more affordable rental units. Sasha Bruce will continue to provide a safe home for youth and families, but we are at capacity, and we need your help. Lend your voice to this important debate.
