Our 2nd Annual Volunteer Award Goes To…

9th of May 2011

SBY’s fantastic Artist volunteer, Zorica Whalen!

Zorica (Zee) Whalen has proven to be hugely instrumental in several ways; including being the teacher of our Youth Art Class, the completion of our Global Youth Service Day mural at R.E.A.C.H., and her work on our Annual Report.

Zee has worked in the arts field in both the United States and Europe for over eleven years for various groups and organizations. Throughout this time, Zee has gained experience in several forms of art including illustration, graphic design, drawing, painting, cartoons, etc. Zee also has experience designing themed interactive displays for movies such as Robots, Chicken Little, and Narnia. Zee had an interest in working with SBY youth because she lived in an orphanage and foster home when she was younger and she knows art had a large impact on her at this time in her life and became very important to her. She wants to give SBY youth the same opportunity to find a passion for art.

Zee started teaching a bi-weekly Sunday Youth Art Class at SBY in the fall and has continued to be a reliable and enthusiastic volunteer ever since. She spends a large portion of her free time preparing for the classes and brainstorming new projects.

In addition to the hours Zee puts in to make the Art Class a success, she also created and sketched a mural for SBY youth to paint during our Global Youth Service Day celebration at our R.E.A.C.H. Program. Zee spent a couple Saturdays at R.E.A.C.H., sketching and charcoaling the mural onto the wall, so that on Global Youth Service Day, all we had to do was fill it in with paint. Click here to see pictures of SBY youth, staff and volunteers painting the mural.

In addition to the Art Class and mural, Zee and her husband, Karim Whalen, have also volunteered their graphic design and artistic abilities to create our Annual Report in-kind. This is a huge undertaking and will save SBY a large amount of funds.

Thank you to Zorica Whalen, for her dedication to SBY this year!!
