SBY to lead substance use prevention planning in Wards 5 & 6

3rd of December 2009

Drug abuse among youth and families in DC correlates to a host of other problems including poverty, family dissolution, school failure and communicable diseases.

SBY has a long history of working in partnership with diverse groups, building trust with them and facilitating productive planning around health and social challenges. The District’s health department has recognized our ability to prevent the negative consequences of drug abuse through its offer to fund a new Prevention Center to be operated by SBY.

SBY has the “pulse” of young people and families at highest risk for addiction and is well-situated to interrupt the progression of drug abuse. The basement of our Sasha Bruce House Shelter at 1022 Maryland Avenue, NE, will be an ideal location for organizing residents (particularly young people) and public stakeholders in Wards 5 & 6. We are excited about this new opportunity to offer a community drop-in center dedicated to nonjudgmental education about the effects of substances and the means to prevent their abuse. Nationally-recognized community planning and mobilization strategies will be at the heart of this important new project. We hope that you will join us as we launch our new Prevention Center. Stay tuned for our ribbon-cutting announcement.
