SBY to open new youth & family center
19th of May 2011
The neighborhood surrounding the Richardson Dwellings public housing projects in Ward 7 is devoid of intermediate civic institutions essential to healthy communities, and it is rife with youth crime and delinquency. According to the MPD Crime Statistics Report, in 2009, there were 1,032 arrests of individuals under the age of 24 in PSA 602, which includes Richardson Dwellings. This represents the highest youth arrest rate among all of DC’s residential neighborhoods.
We believe that our work should focus on young people and families who need it the most. This is especially true during the economic recession, which has had a devastating impacted on our poorest east-side communities. So we have accepted an invitation from the Richardson Dwellings Resident Council and the DC Housing Authority to open a drop-in youth and family support center. We will use a variety of proven methods to improve family functioning and reduce gang activity including street- and home-based outreach, critical incident response, crisis intervention, mentoring, counseling, case management, and various strategies to promote interpersonal skills, job readiness training, information and referrals and recreational opportunities.
Join us for the Grand Opening of this new program on Thursday, May 26 from 4 to 6 pm. Address is 260 54th Street, NE. Come out and help our staff, community partners and the Richardson Dwellings residents choose a name for this important new partnership.
