SBY to open new community center in Ward 8

18th of February 2009

DC’s Ward 8 has the city’s highest rates of poverty, violence and communicable diseases – and its most under-performing schools. Youth living there need a range of supports, and one of these is help in organizing for positive social change. SBY’s newest program, Youth-Led, aims to do just that.

Youth-Led has been designed to foster creativity, personal responsibility and civic engagement and to empower young people to bring the change they would like to see in their community. Participants will connect with mentors, set personal goals, and they’ll choose from a wide range of development opportunities including the media arts, a college access course and HIV/AIDS testing. Parents and families will find support with the help of an educational advocate and learning opportunities that will support families through times of transition and difficulty.

Please come and celebrate our promise of high quality programming to youth and families at our official ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 30, 2009 from 6-8pm at our new site 2208 Martin Luther King, Jr., Ave. SE. For more information, please contact Erica DeBardeleben via e-mail.
