Summer enrichment celebration & awards

20th of July 2011

Offering positive youth development activities during the summer is an important part of our work, and correlates to school success. This year, in addition to our Summer Enrichment Program offered historically at the Bruce House Shelter, we have expanded “camp” to another location so we can serve more youth.

The additional location is in our newest program, the Richardson Youth Center, run by our dedicated staff member, Daniel Davis. Now we can serve 25 youth daily at each camp location!

“The annual Bruce House summer youth enrichment program has kicked off and has been running ever since!” Perisha Wallace, Bruce House Summer Enrichment Coordinator, says, “The youth are offered tutoring, including education in various life and social skills to take home, from poetry, music, dance, art therapy, sex trafficking awareness, and much more! The youth seem excited about the program, and are very interested in this year’s topics. We have a full house this summer, and almost an equal gender population. I am excited to see what more this summer has in store!”

Summer camp at the Richardson Youth Center is also going well. “The teen program at Richardson Youth Center grows every day and creates a true safe place for young people in our city’s far Northeast neighborhoods,” Dan Davis says. The Center came out of a need for positive youth programming in the Richardson Dwellings housing project. Expanding our summer Enrichment Day Camp to include Richardson Dwellings is the first step in engaging the Richardson Dwellings residents in SBY’s positive youth programming.

Join us for our Summer Enrichment Program’s Celebration and Award Ceremony on Thursday, August 4 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at the Sasha Bruce House, 1022 Maryland Avenue, NE.
