Youth forum in Southwest
7th of February 2011
Listening to youth and encouraging them to express their vision for improving their lives are essential parts of our work. This approach was evident at a recent forum which we convened at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Southwest. Several dozen young people were joined by Councilmember Tommy Wells, Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners, housing project resident councils, parents and guardians in a wide ranging discussion about ways to improve our community.
Key questions were asked of the youth, like “What are some of the problems in Southwest?” and “What are some of the ways youth can prevent crime?” Their answers revealed profound insight. Among the young peoples’ suggestions of ways to prevent crime was to “Find things to get involved in,” and “Separate yourself from bad influences.” When the youth were asked what works in preventing violence, they said to find programs to assist with their problems and to identify safe places to find refuge, like recreation centers. Read more of the youths’ answers in the January/February 2011 issue of The Southwester.
We would like to remind the community of our Safe Place Program, which offers immediate respite at our shelter for any young person on the street who feels unsafe in any situation. Please click here to learn more about Safe Place.
