Youth-Led
Youth-Led has been designed to foster creativity, personal responsibility and civic engagement and to empower young people to bring the change they would like to see in their community. Students from Ballou and Anacostia Senior High Schools in Ward 8 connect with mentors, set personal goals, and choose from a wide range of development opportunities including the media arts, a college access course and HIV/AIDS testing. Parents and families find support with the help of an educational advocate and learning opportunities that will support families through times of transition and difficulty.
Youth-Led’s new community center focuses on teaching the democratic process and civic engagement. The overarching philosophy is to empower youth to become the positive influence their community needs in order to bring about transformative change. Staff members Erica DeBardeleben and Adam Angel are driven by a common philosophy that youth can be empowered to make institutional change through their own creative talents.
