Volunteering at SBY provides an opportunity for groups and individuals to have a powerful and positive impact on the lives of young people and families in the District. An overview of volunteer opportunities is listed below. Both one-time experiences and ongoing positions are available.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact our coordinator, Mr. Taurus McGhee at 202-546-4900. He will schedule an interview with you.

Tutor

Help individuals with basic skills and schoolwork. Tutoring can be done within groups or on a one-on-one basis.

Outreach Assistant

Support counselors in providing street based services including health and HIV/AIDS resources and shelter referrals to youth in the afternoons and evenings.

Group Activities

Work with staff to design and organize cultural, educational, athletic or recreational activities for groups of SBY youth. Activities occur mainly on evenings and weekends.

Hotline Crisis Counselor

Answer and field crisis calls to the Safe Place Hotline and emergency shelter. Provide support to parents and teens in crisis, coordinating agency responses. Training is provided.

Maintenance Miracle Work

Help keep SBY beautiful and functional by volunteering time, energy, skills, or supplies toward improving our programs. SBY welcomes assistance with landscaping, gardening, repair work, painting, sewing, and building.

Administrative Aid

Assist staff with non-clinical tasks such as answering phones, typing, data entry, and research. Typically, these volunteer opportunities are available during office hours.

Professional Resource

Increase SBY’s effectiveness by contributing your professional knowledge. Everything from legal advice to interior design, electrical wiring to health care is welcome. Computer and fundraising advice and assistance are particularly helpful.

Group Presenter

Share your experiences, hobbies, or expertise in a field with our young people. Give a presentation, lead a discussion, or create a workshop. Topics may include almost anything.
