Programs
At Sasha Bruce Youthwork, we firmly believe in the transformative power of opportunities and guidance for young individuals, enabling them to shape their lives and become the leaders of tomorrow. Through our programs, countless youth have not only excelled academically, graduating at the top of their classes but have also blossomed into exceptional employees, pursuing fulfilling careers of their choice.
Moreover, they have become responsible parents, partners, and citizens, contributing positively to their communities. We understand the impact of feeling unheard and unsupported, which can lead to teenage discouragement and disengagement. That’s why our dedicated staff goes the extra mile to ensure that every young person realizes their immense potential and believes in a future filled with brightness and possibilities.
• G.E.D. Preparation (if necessary);
• After school tutoring;
• Mentoring (particularly during summer months)
• Study skills development;
• SAT/ACT preparation;
• Career exploration and training opportunities;
• College tour arrangements and visits;
• Practical supports on college campuses where participants have enrolled; and
• College scholarship and financial assistance support.
The initial cohort will be comprised of 5 prospective undergraduate students during the project’s first year of operation with a plan to add an additional 5 SBY clients annually (until the program reaches a maximum of 25 students).
Candidates interested in joining the cohort group will be required to complete a career interest inventory in addition to submission of school records and a reference for college/career readiness from a SBY program manager. Client credentials will be reviewed by project supporters to include a representative from the Kaempfer Family; a member of the SBY Board of Directors; a representative of the SBY’s Community Impact Council; SBY’s Chief of Programs; and a member of the SBY Senior Team.
Georgiana Warner and J.W. Kaempfer established the Lukey Kaempfer Transformation Fund on April 17, 2019 in memory of their son, Lucas Alexander DePeyster Kaempfer (1992-2016). Lukey Kaempfer’s family members and friends remember him most as an agent of change. Lukey was known for transforming moments of anger into laughter and negative situations into positives. The Fund will celebrate and memorialize the life of Lukey Kaempfer, while transforming the lives of homeless and at-risk youth through this new educational advancement project.

The Jonathan and Hannah Allen Innovation Lounge – a multidisciplinary space designed by youth for youth – is located in DC’s only homeless youth shelter for minors. The lounge offers a fun and innovative space to inspire creativity, open-mindedness, and the entrepreneurial spirit among homeless and runaway youth. The Lounge is outfitted with:
The lounge is named in honor of Jonathan Allen, Defensive Lineman for the Washington Redskins, and his wife Hannah, in recognitition for their commitment to improving the lives of homeless youth in the DC Region.
The lounge will serve homeless, runaway, and neglected residents living in any of our residential programs in DC and Prince George’s County.
The Lounge serves as the education site for the Lukey Kaempfer Transformation Project, which helps formerly homeless youth pursue a higher education and vocational training.

The Sasha Bruce Rapid Response Fund provides the organization with the resources to help address the immediate needs of youth experiencing homelessness. In addition, the fund allows us to make strategic investments in our programs to improve our effectiveness and bring us closer towards ending youth homelessness.

The Learning Hub at Barracks Row provides programming and access services for Sasha Bruce youth ages 12-24. Located in the basement of our main office building on 8th Street, we are currently serving several of Sasha Bruce’s residential and community-based programs. We also offer individualized and group facilitated sessions as they relate to Academic & Career Success and Workforce Development.
Our Services Include:

Sasha Bruce provides programming for youth ages 5 to 21 who live in the Richardson Dwellings property and the surrounding Clay Terrace community, through its work at the Richardson Youth Center. Most importantly, the center provides a safe place in the community. It facilitates various workshops and violence prevention activities on topics such as career development, health and wellness, creative expression, conflict resolution, community service and sexual orientation issues. The Credible Messenger Program works to reduce court system recidivism and gang violence among youth through peer leader outreach and restorative justice strategies. Its mentor-led programming works with youth and their families to provide a range of services to advocate for and support youth in the justice system, and to prevent recidivism and transition towards educational achievement, strengthened families, and job access. Credible Messenger offers emotional and mental health programs, job training, financial literacy and guidance, life skills, family support, and educational mentoring. Many mentors previously had been in the juvenile justice system and were inspired by the Credible Messenger program to return to support Sasha Bruce youth.
